Mother 3 - Ch. 2 - Desperate Search
0We're back! But we're just getting started really. What's the story so far? Well, when we last left off, Sunshine Forest was on fire! Lucas' dad Flint was worried sick over his family, who are vacationing just north of the forest. On the way, they find Lighter, a resident who lives in the forest, along with his son 'Fuel', who was trapped in their burning house.
In the process of saving Fuel, Flint fights a trio of burning bugs, as well as a mysterious flying mouse. There are also reports of strange pig-men roaming the forest. Is there a connection? Is there a link? What's going on?? With Lighter injured and the rain beginning to pour, the townspeople decide it's time to take a rest. What's gonna happen next?
CHAPTER 2 - DESPERATE SEARCH
After leaving the burning house, Flint and Fuel were all pitch black covered in soot. Even if you go to the hot spring, their faces will still be covered in soot. Anyway... after the brief dialogue, you'll automatically head to the inn. Fuel will ask if you saw the pig-men and then starts rambling about how you were all pitch black. There's an antidote in the third room, otherwise leave when you're ready.
As you step out, you'll run into Isaac. He'll tell you he saw Hinawa in the mountains and heard Drago's roar afterwards. He asks if Flint has seen his family yet. Head back to Flint's home and you'll find Hinawa's letter, saying they should be home by night-time. It's night-time now, so Flint gets worried. As you leave, Boney will ask to join you.
Now we'll need to head back to the forest. If you recall, there was an area of the forest that was inaccessible due to the flames. Since the fire is now out, you can head in that direction. Eventually you'll then see some people standing by a fallen tree. Isaac and Lighter will show up to try and move the tree. They'll tell you to try and find a different route in the meantime.
The other route will lead to a cliff. It will seem like a dead-end, but as you leave, Boney will notice something and you'll be called by Wess. He'll tell you that his son, Duster, can help you climb the cliff. After an extended sequence, Duster will show up and use his special 'Wall Staples' technique to create a ladder. You can now climb the mountain.
At this point, Duster will join your party. You can grab the scrap of cloth Boney spotted earlier, which is a part of Hinawa's dress. There's a cave nearby with a few items and some moles you can fight. But more importantly, if you continue on the path forward, you'll stumble upon two pig-men making an abomination, a 'Reconstructed Caribou'.
BOSS FIGHT - Reconstructed Caribou (HP - 512)
I don't count the Firefly's or the Flying Mouse as a boss fight, so I would say THIS is the first boss fight of the game. Luckily, there's a very easy way to get through this first boss. Simply have Duster use his 'Wall Staples' skill on the Reconstructed Caribou. This will prevent it from moving for two turns.
Unfortunately, this was not a very successful strategy for me in this fight, as the Wall Staples skill failed twice for me here. But it's still a useful strategy overall.
Please note that if you perform Wall Staples successfully before the Caribou makes its move for that turn, that move will count as the first turn it can't move. Also note that if the Caribou is paralyze, you cannot pre-emptively use Wall Staples on it again until it wears off. Eventually, the Reconstructed Caribou will 'go berserk' and attack all party members with heavy damage.
This is the only move that can be trouble, but otherwise this boss is a piece of cake.
After the fight, you'll see the pig-men's UFO again. When you reach the top of the cliff, you'll notice it's also a dead-end. Head back down and Bronson will call out that your kids have been found. The tree has been cleared, so head down that path.
After a touching reunion with your kids, you'll be given some very disturbing news... Flint does not take the news well and has to be subdued. On that note, we'll end things here. Join us next time for 'Ch. 3 - Torn Apart'.
