Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask Of The Betrayer [PC XLP] pt 87: Chilling Portent
Such a great game.
Even though the theories and themes of the game have little to do with reality and that multidimensionalism and ideas of a multiverse aren't real and don't have a basis in reality, it surely makes for some interesting game themes! It's great and fun and deep to work with in this fantasy world.
I find the description of the portal particularly interesting. I like the analogies used to describe its nature. One of the fascinating things about the game is the premise of dealing with spirit, soul, dream and reality. Thoughts, desires and identity.
To depict a transplanar gate as being literally carved from the essence of the planes is in its own way quite fascinating. As gruesome as it is to say that they were made from "bone" it isn't far from accurate assuming that this concept of planes and a multiverse had any validity. Again, for game purposes, and particularly for game mechanics, its works wonderfully!
There seems to be a running of theme of the Silver Sword of Gith in these games, but speaking now of the portal and when trying to find an explanation for it, you have to wonder if there isn't a relation somehow. Making a standing, static, permanent portal as a gate that connects, granted, the Shadow Plane, with the Fugue Plane is nothing less than an epic feat. There's simply no precedent for it. For the sake of the integrity of all reality and all things, making such a bridge is automatically a dangerous and precarious thing. Not something mortals would probably be capable of.
Araman doesn't say in so many words that his brother carved the portal, but some of his accusations suggest that he had something to do with it, but that most likely was a reference to how the gate was used by the Betrayer, not of its actual creation. The portal stood deep in the temple of Myrkul built on the Shadow Plane. Given Myrkul's past and his evil nature, I'm sure that there was any unjust or "wrong" purpose for the gate, it would be on Myrkul's part.
Myrkul literally benefited from the existence of the Wall of the Faithless and no doubt depended on it to revive himself. He had a direct vested interest in the judgment of the souls of the dead, so his making a portal to that place wouldn't be out of the question. The lower levels of the temple were secured by requiring use of the Silver Sword, so its not as though it was accessible to anyone, just a very very few individuals whom the Sword of Gith claimed as a wielder.
How the portal was made is anyone's guess, I would have thought the ability would be very strictly limited to those with the powers of a deity, but it's possible that the Sword of Gith was needed to complete the task, even in the hands of a god. The Sword of Gith has extraordinary powers; it was capable of irreversibly destroying life via severing of the silver cord! Who really knows what else it was capable of!
