New Best Pokemon Game? An in-depth review of Pokemon Unbound and how it compares to Radical Red.
Recently Pokemon Radical Red has blown up in case you didn’t know, coincidentally right after I made my review of it, which also just happened to go viral. Radical was a hell of a game, it’s the pinnacle of pokemon gameplay and a fantastic game, but right after Radical, a new challenger has arrived that’s so good it’s potentially even better than Radical Red: the newly finished ROM hack Pokemon Unbound, and what a game this is, it’s absolutely fantastic, unlike Radical this is a brand new ROM hack set in a whole new region with an original plot, while also sharing a lot of what made Radical Red fantastic, Unbound is an absolute joy to play through, seriously I was glued to my laptop while playing this, the work put into this game is so impressive it puts the mainline pokemon games to shame, there’s a LOT to talk about here, a new region with a STAGGERING amount of content, innovative never before seen pokemon features like the sidequest system, some of the most creative boss battles ever, and a surprisingly decent plot with a brand new soundtrack. This video will be unpacking what makes this game a gem. While also making comparisons to Radical Red, so is Unbound better than Radical, well the short answer is: yes and no, it depends on what exactly you want in a game and you can argue each case, but I’ll explain the long answer later on in the video, anyways let’s dive into Pokemon unbound.
So what does unbound do differently than other Pokemon games, well the first notable difference is that this game has a whole new setting in the Borrius region, this is a sprawling region with a lot to see and do in it, with a very varied and interesting layout, and to go with it, there’s a new plot which is surprisingly good, tho it isn’t amazing like pokemon insurgence, it’s still much better than what nintendo has come up with, unbounds plot is simple but clever at the same time and doesn’t treat you like your 5 years old. The premise is actually clever as it really fits in with the official lore, the opening cutscene establishes the lore of this region and how it was the region that Kalos fought against in the great war, that revolves around the weapon of mass destruction that was used, and even references AZ. The main premise is that after being attacked by the ultimate weapon, the Borrious region unleashed their guardian pokemon, Hoopa Unbound in desperation to win the war, only to find out that Hoopa at full power was too powerful to be controlled, so it has been sealed since, waiting for the right trainer to claim it. I really liked how this game has a lore premise that could totally fit in with the official lore, the plot of the game itself starts off in direction only to twist and turn into something very different, as the game progresses you learn about the origins and motivations of the rival character and the villain’s, I won’t spoil anything but this was surprisingly well done.
