TL:DW version: it's the Atlas, influence altars and map mods, not the Archnemesis monster that does the final blow. This is true of outright oneshots, and also non-oneshot burst kills.
I did some testing of oneshots and Archnemesis. I ran a bunch of Heists and... just didn't get oneshot. Nor was I particularly close to it. Heist has the most rare monsters of all content in the game so if it was Archnemesis mods that were killing people, it would happen more in Heist.
Wrath of the Cosmos and Eldritch Gaze are far, far more deadly than the 'average player' expects them to be. These should be seen as tuning up your maps into uber maps, just as allocating The Perfect Storm tunes up Sirus to Uber Sirus.
Then there's a number of brutal map mods that might not kill you on their own... but add in two of them and an altar mod, and boom, you start seeing player deaths.
The Archnemesis monster might do the final blow, but the death was set in stone when you clicked the "nearby monsters deal 85% of physical damage as extra chaos damage" on the "monsters have +470% crit chance and +54% critical strike multiplier" map. Pre-Archnemesis rare monster mods would have killed you under those conditions.

If GGG don't reduce the capacity for unprepared players to get in over their head with altar mods, Wrath/Gaze and the way they synergize with maps mods then they should expect a very negative reaction to 3.20, even if it's otherwise the best league ever.
