Code Vein is an anime souls-like game, and in my opinion it is harder than DS3 and on the same difficulty as DS1. The game has a very unique skill system where you have access to a skill list depending on what class you equip. Then from the list you level each skill, once fully leveled you can use those skills in any other class if you meet the stat requirement. You can equip up to 8 active skills ranging from buffs to debuffs, and mele attacks to magic range attacks. You can also equip 4 passive skills that helps you specialize your character even further. Just like other souls-like game you have an items bar where you can equip a variety of buffs and healing items to help you through out the game. Your main healing item functions just like an estus flask, you can upgrade this item by finding hidden upgrades through out the game, and let me tell you they are very hidden sometimes. Combat is as you would expect it to be but a lot faster paced than Dark Souls, almost to the same pace as Bloodborn. Boss fights in this game is a joy to fight against as they have a variety of moves that you need to learn in order to defeat them. The enemy design is fantastic and unique, I have never seen another design like it. Lastly your companion AI is very competent to the point that they can solo a group for you while you just dodge around, they are a huge help in boss fights as well. The game has to difficulty modes as one would expect from the souls-like game but if you want the game to be harder simply turn off the AI companion.

My complaints about the game is few, but a major one is definitely the very uninspired level design
where most maps feels like you explore an open area then move on to the next "bonfire" or mistle, as it is called in this game, to only explore another big area then repeat. The parry system is abit off as I would try to parry an attack but sometimes it works while other times it doesn't. Your AI companion tend to be ignored by the enemy in this game that isn't a boss and enemy npc just runs by your AI partner or completely ignore them while focusing on you. This is bad design imo because then you can just focus on dodging or blocking while your companion kills everything from behind. The game gives you AI companion but most mobs just ignore them and only target you, why give you a companion but not program the enemy to recognize that they are there, not this is only a problem with non-boss enemies.

So in conclusion I like the game and think that is you want a more classic soul-like experience then Cod Vein is definitely for you. I may be a little bias since I favor fantasy games but i would give this an 8/10.
