PACIFIC NORTHWEST (SILVER QUEST)

Introduction: In each of the towns we visited in Canada and Alaska, we met local Inuit, who played an unusual variation of the Jewel Board, where new spaces were added to the board while playing. Reluctantly, I went along with the variation, but preferred not to utilize it as much, since I considered it cheating. I set out a personal goal to not use more than three of the new spaces on the Jewel Board. The Inuit said that if I was successful, I would receive a jewel that would outshine the sun. I wondered if it might have helped lead us to the next clue we so desperately needed to find.

CONDITIONS

Five Jewels (Amethysts, Chicky Masks, Diamonds/Gold Nuggets, Hardwood Masks, and Rubies) plus White Pearls

LEVELS

Location: Atlin, Stikine, British Columbia, Canada
Initial Squares: 66
Journal Entry: In the gold rush mining town of Atlin, British Columbia, we stopped at the local springs to have a drink of cold mineral water. However, we discovered Sebastian, looking pallid and heaving on the ground. He told us that he had been given a cup of mineral water that was laced with traces of peanuts, which he was extremely allergic to. He believed that Mr. L was trying to poison him, and might have been hiding somewhere nearby.

Location: Stewart, Kitimat-Stikine, British Columbia, Canada
Initial Squares: 62
Journal Entry: Green-colored hail clouds hovered over us in Stewart, British Columba – a clear warning sign that a terrible hailstorm was on its way. We barricaded ourselves inside a cabin and observed as golf ball-sized hailstones slammed against the ground outside. To pass the time, we played Jewel Boards and use the Inuit rule of adding a new space each time a white pearl falls off the board. We challenged one another to solve the board using the fewest dynamic spaces.

Location: Glacier Bay, Yakutat, Alaska Territory, USA
Initial Squares: 90
Journal Entry: In Glacier Bay, Alaska, as we watched ice fronts calve dramatically from a glacier and fall into the sea, I was reminded of how the jewels now seemed to fall off the board when I added a few dynamic spaces, which could have made solving each board much more challenging if I was not careful. As we sailed into the bay, I realized that it was hard to believe that these islands were completely covered by ice over 200 years ago.

Location: Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada
Initial Squares: 82
Journal Entry: While observing the Whitehorse Rapids in Whitehorse, Yukon, Hani noted how the running waters resembled the man of a white horse, which prompted Natalie to look very saddened. She explained that she missed her horse-riding lessons and wondered when she would ever have been able to lay eyes on Mina, her favorite horse, and her beautiful golden mane. Emma and I reassured her that we would soon find the cure to restore her eyesight.

Location: Dawson, Yukon, Canada
Initial Squares: 85
Journal Entry: In Dawson, Yukon, Emma thought we were getting closer to solving the mystery behind how to restore Natalie’s eyesight. In the local library, she discovered an old newspaper article about a mysterious affliction that spread in the region. The victims reportedly were blinded for years until, one day, sunlight reflected off the gold flecks found in the abandoned panning creeks, which somehow restored the victims’ eyesight. We immediately brought Natalie to one of them but, alas, nothing happened.

Location: Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star, Alaska Territory, USA
Initial Squares: 88
Journal Entry: We met Masak, an Iñupiaq man living in Fairbanks, Alaska, who was recently infected by the spores. He invited us to his village, where we entered his home and met his wife and children. He explained that, since being blinded by the spores, all marine life had disappeared from the area, as if Masak’s presence repelled them away. The phenomenon distressed the entire village, as they heavily relied on fishing to supply their food. And so, Masak and family had been ostracized.

Location: Barrow, North Slope, Alaska Territory, USA
Initial Squares: 77
Journal Entry: At the Messenger Feast, held in Barrow, Alaska, we watched a performance of the Eagle-Wolf Dance, a traditional Iñupiat story of swallows turning into wolves. A masked dancer dressed in mittens and an eagle feather headdress ran through the crowd towards Emma. When he unveiled himself, we realized that the dancer was Sebastian. He confessed his lasting love to her and asked her to return to him, an offer she adamantly refused. How dared he try to steal Emma away from me again!
