"Persona 3: FES" Gameplay commentary walkthrough on PS2 & PS3!

Persona 3: FES, one of my all time favourite JRPGs. A mix of turn based combat, dating sim, school sim and rage inducing fury. Persona 3's gameplay is some of the finest gameplay i've encountered in a JRPG. It's a title that demands you pay attention and strikes you down fast and hard if you decide to play recklessly.

Persona 3 FES has a story that feels straight out of your typical anime. From it's anime style graphics, to it's heavy handed story, including it's twists and turns. If you've watched a lot of anime, then Persona 3's story arc might seem a bit predictable, even with it's predictably confusing attempts at tricking the player. But, personally, I love it. This game has so much character and style that it's instantly understandable as to why Persona 3 spawned a new breath of life for the franchise that has now become revered the world over.

Alongside the great combat, is the games social link feature. Throughout your peaceful days you'll be making friends at Gekkoukan High School, going on dates with girls from class, and getting yelled at by old Monks all while keeping your best friends crush on his teacher and another's damaged knee a secret to keep them safe from trouble. That might sound like a lot to do at once, and it is! Getting all the social links in this game requires a lot of micro management. One i'm not cut out for.

On top of all that is the Personas themselves. Monsters buried deep within you that can be summoned in order to defend innocence from Shadows. There's a whole host of Personas in this game that will have you addicted for hours, grinding levels and fusing older Personas in order to finally obtain that special creature you've had your heart set on all week, only to find that this Persona is weak against the boss you've been stuck on. Persona 3 is a hard game.

So, that's making friends and fighting monsters out of the way. You'd think that'd be enough with Persona 3's content, but nope!

One of the key elements to life is learning, and this game requires you to study and develop as any other teenager does. That means putting off fighting monsters to study for an upcoming test. Trying to level up your academics to pass a pop quiz, which in turn will open up further options with Social Links. Then you have your courage and charm to level, too! All of which will improve you as a person and get your body googled at by your favourite crush.

And let's not forget the treasure searching and weapons crafting, and further missable side missions that add so much more to the game.

Persona 3 FES is one of my all time favourite video games, and the 130 plus hours spent on this playthrough is already missed as I long to return to the world of Persona.

Furthermore, with Persona 3 FES there's an extra part of the game once you complete the original story. Persona 3's The Answer. It's bad. Real bad. Truly a snorefest, but hey, it has some cool lore in the end that leaves more questions than it gave answers. Funny.

While there's a Persona 4 and a Persona 5 out in the world alongside many side games, it's this game and it's characters i'd love to return to. To see Akihiko, Yukari, Junpei, and all the others again would be a dream made real. Persona 3 left a massive impression on me and I am in love with this game.

Not that Persona 3 doesn't have flaws. It totally does. It's imbalanced in some very dull ways. Such as grinding levels to obtain Persona's that are only unlocked once you reach a certain mark. Or the fact that the further in the game you get, the more you realize how little there is to do once you've mastered a few Social Links. On top of it all, once you master these Social Links after reaching Rank 10, you'll find that you cut contact with your new best friend, leaving you feeling hallow and empty. The max social link problem feels more like a budget reason than anything else, but still hurts massively.

Another issue many gamers have is the inability to control your teammates in battle, hoping the AI uses the correct move or strat. While it does cost me many a game over, I find myself loving this feature. Unlike other video game JRPGs, Persona 3 retains the AI's personality you see in cutscenes in the gameplay. The characters still remain themselves instead of becoming a mere extension of you. Yes, it's the unpopular opinion, but I would love this to be a more common place in video games. Yukari feels like Yukari in battle. Where as Tifa feels like a shell waiting my commands, distant from who she is in story. If you understand where I am coming from.

Persona 3 FES is an all time great, and holds up to this day. While its sequels have improved in many areas, I will never see Persona 3 as outdated.

Classic Playstation 2 game. I will always want more Persona 3.
