[PREVIEW] How to Draw JIGSAW KILLER / BILLY THE PUPPET (Saw) | Tutorial Time Lapse
248There are those horror movies that are more psychological like The Blair Witch Project, The Others, or Paranormal Activity, and then there are those slasher movies that are gory more so than they are scary. The SAW movie franchise is that latter, and it introduced two now-iconic horror characters to pop culture: JIGSAW (or JIGSAW KILLER), and BILLY THE PUPPET. In this two-part tutorial, I show you how to draw these two step by step!

CHARACTER BIOS:
Jigsaw was introduced in the 2004 film Saw through the character Lawrence Gordon's recounting of his first killings. Jigsaw is described as a mysterious person who kidnaps people he believes take their lives for granted and subjects them to "tests", usually mechanical devices rigged to maim or kill the subjects if they fail to complete it within a certain time period. Unlike most killers, Jigsaw never intends to kill his subjects; the purpose of his traps is to see if the subject has the will to live, as he hopes their experience will teach them the value of life, although he sometimes places his victims in situations where they themselves must kill others in order to follow the terms that he sets. In John's mind the deaths of those that fail are justified, because those who fail to do what is necessary to survive don't deserve life. As his victims increase, the media dubs him The Jigsaw Killer, or simply Jigsaw, because of the jigsaw puzzle-shaped piece of flesh that he removes from unsuccessful subjects, which he explains in Saw II is meant to symbolize that the subject "was missing a vital piece of the human puzzle: the survival instinct".
Billy is a puppet that has appeared in the Saw franchise. It was used by John Kramer to communicate with his test subjects by delivering recorded messages, often appearing on a television screen or occasionally in person to describe the details of the traps and the means by which the test subjects could survive.
In the film series, before becoming the Jigsaw Killer, Kramer was believed to have created Billy to be given as a toy to his unborn child. However, Jill, his wife, is shown to miscarry after being hit in the stomach by a swinging hospital door due to Cecil ramming it open without looking. Kramer's unresolved anger was likely a primary motive for creating the puppet as a vehicle for his instructions trap victims. The traps he created can be seen as a manifestation of his anger with people who he feels don't appreciate having their life when his unborn baby was killed before having a life of its own.
Although it has never actually been identified in the films, "Billy" is the name by which it is referred to by writers, directors, and members of the cast and crew on documentaries and interviews. The name was given to it by its real-life creator James Wan, who is the director and co-writer of Saw. Some claim that the name is spelled "Billie", though Wan himself spells it "Billy".
