In this episode, we expand on our review of the #RetroTink 5x and with a system spotlight focusing on gameplay footage for specific systems, in this instance the Sony #PlayStation One using Composite Video Output (No bloody PS2, PS3, PS4, or PS5!).

In our review of the RetroTink 5x, we went through and played a lot of different games from a lot of different systems. That being said, due to the overall length of the review we were not able to go into as much depth into each system as we would like. As such, we have created videos specifically focusing on one console. Make sure you bookmark our playlist, link below, to be kept up to date when we do release new episodes.

Chapters:
00:00 - Introduction
00:57 - Settings Overview
02:49 - Crash Bandicoot
04:40 - Star Wars: Rebel Assault II
06:41 - Rampage World Tour
09:04 - Gran Turismo 2
12:04 - Mega Max X6

One of the first things that makes this such a powerful combination is the fact that there is, in fact, a dedicated PS1 profile. Actually, that is not totally correct as there are MULTIPLE profiles for the original PlayStation! Having the system already set up for the end user makes it all that much more convenient. The profile is actually compatible with all versions of the original PlayStation.

To connect the PSOne to my RetroTink 5x I used standard composite video cables, mostly because it is what I had. The original PlayStation doesn't support RGB from the box without modification, and I never picked up a set of S-Video cables for it, womp-womp. To connect the PSOne to my RetroTink 5x I actually went through my SCART Switcher with a Composite-to-SCART adapter. Now, to make sure there weren't any issues with degraded image quality or anything I did connect the PSOne right to the RetroTink 5x at one point, and I couldn't tell a difference in the footage myself.

My Television and capture card do not support the 1200P or 1440P outputs that the RetroTink 5x is capable of outputting, but I have 1 device that does. The Genki Shadowcast supports these formats, and I was originally going to capture my footage this way, but there was an issue. The Genki Arcade app for PC sucks, there's no 2 ways around it, and it also doesn't record for you. Great. I tried the Chrome App and the results were decent, but when I went to record, it exported the footage in a really bad format, WEBP. I experimented with uploading the footage to YouTube, having it convert the format into MP4 or something easier to view and edit. By the time I did this the compression and loss of quality looked worse than using standard 1080P through my Hauppauge PVR 60 Pro. Oh well.

Once again the RetroTink 5x Pro absolutely delivered an amazing result with the Sony PlayStation One. For composite video, this looked better than it deserved to. The vibrant colors, sharp (although boxy) pixels, and the gameplay was lag-free. I had previously used a RetroTink 2x Multiformat with this system, and thought it couldn't get any better. I was wrong, it's bigger brother does an amazing job with pumping out amazing results. If you are looking to play retro games on modern TVs, again, the RetroTink 5x truly delivers the goods!
