Sonic Mania Plus: Mania Mode Part 1: Green Hill Zone (Mighty)
62After dealing with Sonic, Tails, & Knuckles at least twice in Mania Mode, I'm going through that same mode with one of Plus' brand new characters, starting with Mighty the Armadillo!
Mighty is actually an older character in the franchise. Older than even Tails and Knuckles! If it weren't for Knuckles, Mighty could been the powerhouse of Sonic's core team, instead.
Mighty plays closer to Sonic than anyone else in this game, but he has his own special abilities that no one else does. First off, his hard armadillo shell can be used to deflect projectiles while he's jumping, rolling, or crouching. While in ball form, this will also protect him from spikes, but if he falls right on him, he'll open up and bounce away. If he lands on spikes again during this, THEN he'll take damage. Also, if you jump on spikes while moving at a fast enough speed, you'll just jitter along the spikes until you stop and/or land on solid ground.
Mighty has an air action technique known as the Hammer Drop, which makes him shoot downward at high speed. This will make him go straight through small enemies and item monitors without bouncing off of them, and they protect him from spikes in a different way in that they give him a non-damaging flinch with mercy invincibility that's shorter than what you'd get from regular damage. So act fast from that!
The Hammer Drop also lets Mighty discover new routes that not even Knuckles can take, but you won't see that in Mania Mode as much as you would in Encore Mode. It WILL occur eventually in this playthrough, though.

Storyline-wise, both Mighty and Ray will be treated like Tails, because Sonic will be the one flying the Tornado at the very beginning of the game, and will do so again later on in Mirage Saloon. This will also change how the game ends.
