A quick test to see how the game plays in widescreen. Could be developed into a proper mod at some point.

By default Spelunky runs a resolution of 320x240 (4:3) and can be scaled up to 4x. In this video I'm playing at 426x240 with 3x scale (1278x720 ...close enough!).

The idea for the mod is to allow custom resolution/scaling settings to allow for fullscreen gameplay on any monitor. It would use Spelunky 1.2 and include TyrOvC's soft fullscreen option. I would want the config program to detect and suggest appropriate resolution/scaling based on current screen resolution - you want to try and maintain a base minimum vertical resolution at (or close to) 240 in order to keep gameplay fair (having extra visual range to see what's coming below makes things easy) - with the option to input any settings the user wants. Preventing the user from seeing farther below could be done by automatically shifting the view upwards when the height is greater than 240. Having extra view distance on the sides doesn't seem like much of an issue gameplay-wise - while you can see more of what's coming, it may be more difficult to use the frozen region to your advantage to avoid some situations.

Other issues:
- HUD and message text will need to be dynamically centered or repositioned based on resolution.
- Non-scrolling rooms (level transitions, scores, challenges) will have empty space on the side when there is extra width. Could center the view on the room and then fill in empty space around it with identical wall tiles.
- Objects in any scenes (intro, start of encounter with Olmec, ending) where objects are activated based on their distance from the edge of a 320 pixel wide window will have to be adjusted to work (and not look bad) based at custom resolution setting.
