Spitfire (level 1&2) - yet another a G.A.C.K wip
turned out to be the project i invested most time and effort in.
yep, 19xx ;)
for once not in the pacific, this time we battle in europe.
don't forget it's a WIP, but it's the one i will certainly finish, all (5) levels are already "drawn" and sprites for all enemies are made.

list of planes which will be to see in the end and kept as close as possible to the original on ONLY 32 - 64 pixels (with exclusion for the grey plane you see, this one is fantasy and will be removed).
"friend"
- Spitfire Supermarine Mk.II (player 1)
- de Havilland "Mosquito" NF Mk.II (NF = Night Fighter, i didn't knew there existed a armed FB (fighter bomber) version, my reference only displays a armed NF and a unarmed Bomber version (player 2). it has successfully replaced the Beaufighter.
"foe"
- Focke-Wulf, Fw-190 "Würger", the standard german fighter plane.
- Messerschmitt, Bf-109 E "Emil", the counterpart to the spitfire, most copied fighter plane layout of WW2, i guess (most build even, 33'000 exemplaries. while the speed record wasn't really made with this type, i guess it's a difference like from a "beetle" to a "carrera". E series ca.900HP - speed record type (prototype V13) ca. 1600HP, engine "burns out", but seems to be unreached since then for propeller planes), of course it was named "Bf-109", PR of the 40's).
- Messerschmitt, Me-262 "Sturmvogel", of course this one won't be missed ;)
- Messerschmitt, Me-163 "Kraftei", you will see why "Staustrahlrohr"....
- Messerschmitt, Bf-110, some failed attempt for a "Destroyer", lately used as PR (photo recon.) or night fighter.
- Junkers Ju-87, "Stuka", needs no explanation i guess.
- Junkers Ju-88, a mid-range Bomber and Night Fighter, similar to the "Mosquito" it's layout is after the "rougeron" principle, the bomber version carries no defensive weapons.
- Henschel Hs-129B-3, "Schlachtflugzeug" (Destroyer, Heavy Fighter), 75mm ! "Tankbreaking" Gun, some stolen Gnome-Rhone engines.
- Heinkel He-111, clumsy looking, but nonetheless very aerodynamic mid-range bomber of the early years. the whole concept of light mid-range bombers, fighter bombers and destroyers failed in war (except as night-fighters and for reconaissance), something "in between" isn't as good as either.
- Heinkel He-177 A "Greif", heavy mid-range bomber.
- Focke-Wulf Fw-200C "Condor", heavy long-range bomber.
- Dornier Do-217K-2, mid-range missile carrier (2 "Fritz-X" SD1400X missiles).
- Arado, Ar 234B "Blitz", the only jet bomber, which hasn't been released in time (even this one would have only two fixed mounted MG's at the tail).
i guess that's all, of course some Tanks, Boats, Sub's, Hidden "Flaks" and (armed!) Trains to fight down all along the way.

some tech info:
for this game i worked around some issues of the G.A.C.K, mainly the problem of collision checking for explosions. usually any object which has collision detection will have collision detection for the explosion to. that's very hindering if you have a chain of fighters to shoot down. you have two possibilities, either you make the animation extremely short (which is sad for such a game), or you create a "dummy" object for the explosion (which has no collision checking) and use it in a compound with the plane. of course unfortunately you can't combine now more as one plane in a compound, but for this type of game it's fine to do so. firing through the explosions nearly doubles your firepower!
the palette of the project is hacked to 125 colors (instead 55) for this game, still i didn't find sometimes the proper color (or shade of).
at the end of the clip you see a short appearance of the He-111 bomber, just to show how that looks if you hit a large plane in this game. "hitting damage" i made possible with "dummy parts". this needs a "hierarchy" for the sprites, which i didn't found for long, now i know that the upper half of a sprite covers always the lower half, this behave i can use to overlay a "unhit" wingpart over the wings with the animation for the fires (i.e. i used this behave now for many "tricks"). as soon as you hitted the wing enough, the covering part "dies" and the fires below are to see.
all planes and whatever you see is handcrafted by me, reference was a paperback named "planes of WW2".
thus, NO Thunderbolts, NO Mustangs, NO Zero and NO "Hayate",
"made in the EU" one could say ;)

"Epic"?, dammit, if ever finished this will be EPIC!
