♫STAFF ROLL (Street Fighter II') New SNES Arrangement - NintendoComplete
131This is an arrangement of Yoko Shimomura's theme for the end credits of Capcom's 1992 arcade game Street Fighter II: Champion Editon. I have arranged it for native playback on SNES hardware, and the audio was recorded directly from a launch-model SNES console.
As I am sure anybody watching this probably knows, this theme, which first debuted in SF2: CE in arcades (but is also present in the SNES port of SF2: The World Warrior), plays during the ending staff roll, but only if you've finished the game on the hardest difficulty level without losing a round. That was a pretty steep challenge, but this song made for a pretty worthwhile reward.
The song appeared in all three SNES versions of Street Fighter II, but I wanted to redo it so it sounded closer to the arcade. The powerful FM synth, a totally different key, and much harder (albeit fuzzier) sound for the percussion - the arcade's music left an impression. I really liked official SNES arrangements of the song, but I wanted to see how closely they might've reproduced the sound of the CPS 1-based arcade hardware had that been their aim. The coin-op employed some seriously heavy audio hardware for its time, including a YM2151 (providing for 8 channels of FM synth, 4op each) and an OKI6295 (4 ch. ADPCM @ appx. 7.6kHz)
Those specs are a fair step above the SNES's, but there were a few creative workarounds I was able to make use of (samples containing multiple instruments, mainly) thanks to how little space the tightly-looped FM instrument samples consumed. All of the FM instruments in this track were sampled directly from the original arcade game's music, as were the harsh drum samples, to keep it all sounding as faithful as possible to the hardware I was attempting to mimic the sound of.
