Greetings, everybody.

It’s time to give Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order a try, even though some of us are still living the ramifications of the crappy Red Dead Redemption 2 launch here on PC, Fallen Order is a game I had some hopes for, because I tend to like action-exploration combat focused games; oh yeah the Origin Premier availability also made things easier, to be honest, so since I was a bit undecided about the game…I just got the access and yeah, just checking it out.

As usual, my current PC specs are as follows:

-CPU: i5 4690K@4.4 GHz with Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO.
-Mobo: Asus Maximus VII Ranger (Z97).
-GPU: Inno3D Twin X2 GTX 1070 (stock) and WHQL driver 441.20.
-RAM: 16 GB DDR3@1866, 9-10-9-28.
-Storage: Kingston SSDNow 300, 240 GB (O.S.), Samsung 750 EVO 500 GB (Game).
-Case: Fractal Design Meshify S2.
-PSU: Corsair RMx 650W 80+ Gold.
-O.S: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64bit with latest updates.
-Monitor: AOC AGON AG251FG 1080p-240Hz

Fallen Order starts by telling us that we should probably use a gamepad (that is never a nice thing to say to a PC gamer, it should be an option, options are cool to have, xD), and as soon as we get into the settings menus, we can see they look really sleek and minimalistic, which is fine.

What’s not so fine is the fact that the game seems to be lacking a bit in the Graphic Settings department, basically including the bare-default settings found in a very early out of the oven Unreal Engine 4 game, without much apparent thought put into them, not even a simple description; the settings go from Medium to Epic, there’s not even a Low preset this time, and some settings like “Post Processing” or “Visual Effects” could and possibly do affect different settings like who knows what…bloom, SSAO, sharpening, etc….are there any? Which setting controls those? I felt disappointed by this, because Respawn has made very, very good PC versions of their games before, when it comes to settings, with clear explanations and decent scalability in games like Titanfall 2, which I already covered here back in the day.

The other major bummer for me is the fact that keyboard movement seems super bad compared to gamepad this time around; this is not like for example in The Witcher 3, or a better example: Darksiders III, a game I thoroughly enjoyed and finished from start to end with keyboard and mouse. In Fallen Order, the keyboard movement is always on the fastest speed, minus the sprint, there’s no walk/slow movement key either to map anywhere…and the strafing animations are just too jerky, lacking significant inertia and smoothness that we could expect to see in a third person action, triple A, game. Disappointed there, honestly but well, gamepad it is, and my Dualshock 4 works flawlessly in the game, no issues when connecting via USB (can’t test other way as I don’t have BT).

Speaking about gamepad, there are no button layouts or presets to choose from, only one, but the actions themselves can be remapped, and I suggest you do so, because attacking with “square” and evading with “circle” is mostly inhuman and should be illegal, and either you have a very weird claw-like fighting game grip on your pad, or better go and remap at least a couple of those things to better-positioned buttons.

The other major problem in the game for now, at least until they release some patches, is stutter…ah yes, my old nemesis, is back again this month to haunt me, after Red Dead Redemption 2, why? xD. At least, this time around it seems it’s not completely my CPU’s fault (although now that it got fixed in RDR2 I can’t really say my CPU is that bad in that game, it’s fine), and seems to be an asset loading / streaming issue, as many users around the net have been investigating the issue quite in-depth, as always, it’s the community finding problems since day one…why am I not surprised? Is QA testing for video games that bad lately? Or publisher pressure, as usual, always wins? Who knows.

In any case, so far I’ve ran through the first two planets and the game looks decent enough visually speaking, and when capping the frame-rate to something stable like 60 FPS, it’s quite better when dealing with the unavoidable stutters caused by the assets loading issue.

As usual, I hope this can be useful to any of you, and I’ll see you in the next one : )
