Sunny Side

Our main objective for this project was to create an environment that demonstrated the process of exploration and the mental mapping of a neighborhood. We wanted to spark feelings such as caution, awareness and confusion in players as well as provide them an opportunity to overcome, face and conquer those fears and feelings and gain confidence.
An additional element that we tried to implement in the game was the process of growing up and how it impacts our understating of our environment. As we develop, we acquire additional tools that assist us in dealing with new situations, and also the scale of things, in relations to us, tends to shift - what was once close and big might seem very small.
In the game, the player plays an egg in search of his twin brother that was taken. The search takes place in the environment surrounding their home (the hen house), which the egg has never before seen. He has to find his way through the unknown places around the neighborhood, while exploring it and familiarizing himself with it - in other words - mapping it out. The way he does so is by demystifying the fog over the map by moving around and learning the space. The fog symbolizes the egg's and player's unfamiliarity with the world.
The landmarks the egg exposes are guarded by fear monsters that symbolize the egg's fear of the unknown. Once the egg exposes a landmark, those fear monsters vanish. If the egg lets the fears catch up with them, they "kill" it and push it back home to start over.
After each level in which the egg successfully reveals the map, he matures slowly, until he eventually turns into a full grown chicken. With this process of maturing, the tools (methods of transportation) that are available to it increase and the environment itself (the map) that he can explore expands.
