115Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars launched at the tail end of SNES lifecycle in 1996, and it introduced a whole new cast of characters to the Mario universe. Mallow, Booster, Smithy, and many more made their debut in this Square RPG, but none are more beloved than Geno. All you have to do is ask the Super Smash Brothers community: they’ve been petitioning to get Geno included since Brawl on the Wii.
To celebrate Super Mario RPG’s 25th anniversary, I played it for the first time. I wanted to know why there was such a fervor for Geno. I pulled in my buddy Gaj, the biggest Geno fan I know, to help. We found that the beginning and ending of his story, his battle style, and the Smash Brothers teases are what cement him as a fan favorite.
If you want to play Super Mario RPG yourself, your options are a bit limited, unfortunately. If you don’t happen to have the Super Nintendo cartridge lying around, you can download it from the Wii U eShop or play it on the SNES Classic Edition. Here’s hoping Nintendo brings it to Switch sometime soon!
