[Synopsis]

This game was part of the Police Quest series developed by Sierra, but it used a 3d engine and was a 1st person like shooter. This game isn't like most fast paced 3d shooters, like Quake, Doom, Hexen, Turok, Shogo Mobile Armored Division, etc. Instead, this game was more like a tactical 3d shooter, like the Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six series. It is like a realistic police simulator, and it follows in the tradition of the Police Quest series when it comes to realism. The first Police Quest games, like Police Quest 1 to 3, and Swat 1 were interactive games with graphical backgrounds. Swat 2 was more like a isometric tactical game, and Swat 3 was based on a 1st person shooter with a 3d engine. Swat 4 was a game of similar format, and that was released in 2005.

Swat 3 was a police simulator where you have to deploy different weapons lethal or non lethal to subdue dangerous suspects which the regular police cannot handle. Swat police are more like gendarmerie, different countries around the world have these types of police. They are militarized police, and in other countries you call them combat police. These types of police are specially trained to deal with terrorists and other dangerous threats. They are armed with fully automatic weapons, explosives, and other specialized equipment which most regular police do not have.

Unlike a 1st person shooter where your job is to kill everyone on sight, this game requires you to arrest suspects rather than kill them. Thus, you have to at least give the suspects a chance to surrender by using CS gas, or telling them to drop their weapons. If the suspects don't drop their weapons and keep on resisting then you can take them out. The difference between the police and the military is that the military's job is to neutralize targets while the police's job is to arrest suspects and charge them.

In this game, if you kill any innocent people by mistake then your mission is a failure. Marksmanship is important in this game, because you don't want to use automatic weapons and spray it everywhere. The bullets from a M-16 can go through walls, and even the HK MP5's 9mm fmjs can also go through walls.

The game starts out with you dealing with deranged individuals, heavily armed home invaders to terrorists who believe in whatever they believe in, and they will kill and harm anyone that get in their way. As you get further in the game, getting compliance is more and more difficult. In other words, it is more difficult to get a higher score, because you will be forced to neutralize suspects rather than arrest them. You can't always arrest suspects armed with automatic weapons wearing body armor and tactical vests.

As for the game play, you lead a squad of 4 other Swat officers. You use commands to give them orders, like breach and clear, deploy, fall in, etc. Don't shoot your squad members, or they will shoot you even if it is friendly fire. In this game, you have to take everything nice and slow, and use your equipment to clear every room. Small rooms are easy to clear, but big rooms or large spaces are much more difficult to clear. You can use the tactical mirror to see around corners, because you don't want to rush into a room without knowing what is in there. In real life, a couple of shots from a assault rifle whether that be a 5.56x45mm or 7.62x39mm can kill or maim you. Even if you wear ballistic vest, every part of your body is not protected. To finish a mission, you need to meet all the goals, like rescue all hostages, neutralize all suspects, and collect all weapons. Your score will depend on how long the mission took to complete, and how many people you didn't fatally neutralize. If you arrest more suspect then your score will be higher.

All in all, I thought this was a great game, but it did have very high system requirements back when I got it in 2000. I played it on a Pentium 3 850 MHZ with a Voodoo 3 2000 16 MB video card back in 2000. I had to use a emulator to run this game, and it was more sluggish than running it on a Pentium 3 850 MHZ. I ran this game at 800 x 600, and it ran very well on my old computer, and the performance was also not that great. The recommended processor for this game was a 1.0 GHZ based computer. I did run this game again on a Pentium 4 1.8 GHZ with a Voodoo 4 4500 in 2001, and that did run well.
