The list continues to throw up some fantastic games that I otherwise may not have played. The immediate standout of this nonlinear Metroidvania is how stunning the art is, and how beautiful the orchestral score is. Working your way around different environments as you try to restore the elements (fire, water, wind and ice) and the spirit light of the blind forest (extinguished by the antagonist, Kuro the giant owl) is absolutely breathtaking at times, with vibrant colours and strikingly high detail in the foreground and background. The plot is one which will tug at heartstrings of the most hardened player.

The gameplay itself is a challenge, and one which you have to adapt to very quickly as Ori starts out as a weak creature until you learn abilities that will allow you to navigate more difficult areas to progress. Exploration of previous areas will allow you to increase your life gauge and energy gauge, and I would say that it is necessary - though the areas are interesting enough for this not to feel a chore. You also learn very quickly to use soul links - I died in excess of 450 times on my run, so I learned to save often - though you can only save if you have the energy to do so, so you must decide if it's right to save or be conservative with expending this energy.

The game can be incredibly frustrating in parts that leave you feeling hard done by, but it sinks its talons in to you and isn't annoying enough to quit - and the sequences where Kuro gives chase or you try to escape lava or water offer can be an ordeal, but are created in such a wonderful way that you absolutely must see what happens next. This game simply must be played if you are a fan of the genre, and I'd say that it's on the verge of being classed as a masterwork.
