The best one can do in DiRT Rally with a keyboard, in a raining, dark afternoon in Wales, with a RWD
The point is: DIRT RALLY IS NOT DESIGNED FOR PLAYING WITH KEYBOARD!
This is me playing the daily event with my normal shit keyboard, after 82 hours playing.
After discovering the point in the title of this video, my idea about this game has altered for several times.
At first I think, "wow this game is fucking hard, I cannot even drive in a straight line, is this worth the money?" Frustration and doubt arose, because later I found that DiRT Rally is highly praised, but it may be the hardest sequence of the series.
And then I entered the "omni-tuning stage", where I realised that unlike in Sega Rally, each every car has a lot of different features and I think I must tune every piece of each car to get a better performance, and I thought tuning would be the reason why this game is the most "sim" car racing game.
But then, tired of tuning and practising 10 times before each match and some daily event, I began to suspect that tuning controls a large part of how cars are functioning, but I may drive wrongly. So I began to watch the tutorial videos. Then I found that they aim mainly for "hard-guns" drivers who have played this series a lot and those most experienced players, because in these short tutorials I can found some of my playing experiences proved, but abstracted in highly polished languages. Videos are good, but very short.
Then I am lost, until I began to go back to play Sega Rally, where I found when driving with keyboard, the steering is also very exaggerated and I lost the "sense" I used to have months ago. Why?
At last I see the reason: in both games, steering with keyboard is hard because the sensitivity is set "to the extreme", meaning that if I press the steer right key, there's no "right 30 degrees" or "right 90 degrees", instead, just to the most right. So I often see my car zigzagging and fails to go straight. Actually it reminds me of driving in GTA 3 Vice City, another game firstly aimed for consoles.
But in Sega Rally, the problem is not obvious, because the tracks are wide enough to contains 4 cars so I have much more space to let the car spin, and when cornering, my "spin drift" gives me advantages. But in DiRT, the tracks are very narrow................
And, I began to search and I found there had been many discussions about keyboard vs. controller & steering wheel, and mostly they ended in unpleasant discord.
So, I change camera to outside-shoulder (YES I was previously driving with IN-CAR CAMERA) and recorded this video. The result is not so bad, but still far from enough to beat the first tournament. I know that I have done this good enough but the path chosen is wrong.
Conclusion: this is very likely the best one can do with a keyboard in this game, and furthermore, is not worth trying. I will buy a controller tomorrow and end this pain in the ass. Period.
