Players control Joel, a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenage girl, Ellie, across a post-apocalyptic United States. The Last of Us is played from a third-person perspective. Players use firearms and improvised weapons, and can use stealth to defend against hostile humans and cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated fungus in the genus Cordyceps. In the online multiplayer mode, up to eight players engage in cooperative and competitive gameplay.

We got some more details too, with Druckmann, Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson appearing onstage to announce that the game features the original performances, but animations have been enhanced. The game features new enemy AI based on The Last of Us Part 2, 60FPS performance, and new combat options.
A new blog post also detailed the bonuses included in the different versions. The Digital Deluxe edition will cost $80 and include multiple early unlocks in the game such as increased crafting, healing, reload upgrades, clip upgrades, and more.
The Firefly Edition will cost $100 and include a SteelBook, display case, all four issues of The Last of Us: American Dreams with new cover art for each comic, as well as all the digital bonuses.
The long-rumored remake of The Last of Us has been leaked – and it's now officially referred to as The Last of Us Part 1. It will be released for PS5 on September 2, and a PC version is in development.
Seemingly unwittingly revealed by Sony's own PlayStation Direct site, the listing was picked up by ResetEra user modiz. While the listing itself has been removed, at time of writing a trailer is still available to view. The remake will include upgraded versions of the base game, and its DLC prequel, Left Behind. No mention is made of the Factions multiplayer mode.
The listing calls the remake "a total overhaul of the original experience, faithfully reproduced but incorporating modernized gameplay, improved controls and expanded accessibility options. Plus, feel immersed with improved effects and enhanced exploration and combat."
Development of The Last of Us began in 2009, soon after the release of Naughty Dog's previous game, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. For the first time in the company's history, Naughty Dog split into two teams; while one team developed Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, the other half developed The Last of Us. The relationship between Joel and Ellie became the focus, with all other elements developed around it. Actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson portrayed Joel and Ellie, respectively, through voice and motion capture, and assisted creative director Neil Druckmann with the development of the characters and story. The original score was composed and performed by Gustavo Santaolalla.
The game will seemingly be sold in both a standard and Firefly Edition. The latter includes a steelbook display case, copies of the Last of Us: American Dreams comics issues 1-4, and "early in-game unlocks" (what those are is unclear).
We first heard about the Last of Us remake last year, amid wider reports of turbulence at Sony's first party studios. The game was reportedly originally being handled by Sony's Visual Arts Service Group, but later effectively became a Naughty Dog project.
Following its announcement in December 2011, The Last of Us was widely anticipated. It was released for the PlayStation 3 in June 2013. It received critical acclaim, with praise going to narrative, gameplay, visuals, sound design, characterization, and depiction of female characters. The Last of Us became one of the best-selling video games, selling over 1.3 million units in its first week and 17 million by April 2018. The game won year-end accolades, including multiple Game of the Year awards, from several gaming publications, critics, and game award ceremonies. It has been cited as one of the greatest video games ever made.
Naughty Dog released several downloadable content additions; The Last of Us: Left Behind adds a single-player campaign following Ellie and her best friend Riley. A remastered version of the game, titled The Last of Us Remastered, was released for the PlayStation 4 in July 2014.[a] The Last of Us Part II, a sequel, was released in June 2020. A remake of the game, titled The Last of Us Part I, is set to release in September 2022 for PlayStation 5, and later for Microsoft Windows. A television adaptation is currently in production by HBO, written by Druckmann and Craig Mazin and starring Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie.
