3Sunless Sea is probably best summed up as a collection of delicious tales of intrigue. As a Captain of a steam powered merchant vessel, you find yourself in a twisted Victorian setting that has been tainted equally by one measure of Lovecraftian horror, and an equal measure of nonsensical morbid humor. Each playthrough will see your Captain set sail on the open Zee, living a life of adventure and seeking their own unique ending...or finding their end.
This game has one thing that truly stands out, and it can be summed up in a single word. Atmosphere. Sunless Sea creates such a vivid atmosphere, at times you will literally have a physical reaction to the moments it creates. It is a game that makes you feel, and one that feels more at home on a book shelf full of your old favorite scholastic choose your own adventure novels than in your steam library.
Like any good book, this is one well worth picking up and diving into, but only if you have the stomach for the written word, and punishing roguelike game mechanics. The Unterzee is unforgiving, but not without its treasures. And if your first Captain doesn't succeed, perhaps one of his heirs will.
