Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro Review: Outdated But Still Awesome
Every 4Runner fan on the entire planet knows the current fifth generation desperately needs an update. From the underpowered engine to that sluggish five-speed automatic, this body-on-frame SUV definitely belongs in a past era of performance. And yet, the simplicity and rugged durability are exactly what make the 4Runner unique in today's era of overly complex, techy four-wheelers.
The fifth-gen debuted way back in 2009 and at the very least, Toyota added Apple CarPlay and a tiny touchscreen over the years. During the pandemic, though, demand for 4Runners skyrocketed and now the maxed-out TRD Pro trim commands serious dealer markups—if you can even find one at all. Still, people are definitely shelling out the big bucks to get a 4Runner knowing that values never drop too much. Is the hype really worth it? HotCars contributor Michael Van Runkle took a 2022 4Runner TRD Pro in Lime Rush out for an off-roading and camping trip to find out.
