My friends have been eagerly waiting for this, and even I have been excited to upload this video. They wanted to see the entirety of my difficult auto scrolling level, and here it is: the clear-check video!

This is 『Dragon's Gate』 Prominence Saga, and this is currently the hardest level I've ever uploaded for Super Mario Maker 2. This level is heavily inspired by a Chinese myth of the same name:

This level is basically an upstream swim against the river's strong current then upwards a waterfall cascading from a legendary mountain, and that is why I chose the forest theme, which is the perfect setting for this level. Dragon's Gate is located at the top of the waterfall, and if a carp successfully makes the jump over the Dragon's Gate, then the carp will transform into a majestic dragon.

Trying to swim upwards a waterfall and facing against its strong current is basically impossible for normal humans, and that is why the difficulty of this level is based on that. Mario, Luigi, Toad or Toadette have also tried to swim upwards this legendary waterfall and they witness some fish (Cheep-Cheep) also swimming upwards to the top. Swimming upwards is absolutely difficult as there are various dangers guaranteed to eliminate the player from making progress. Most of these obstacles are incredibly tough, as they would require some precise timing to swim through dangerous hazards. At the top of the waterfall, a majestic dragon that must have transformed from a fish seems to be very hostile and wants to get rid of the player.

While Dragon's Gate might be inspired by a Chinese myth, the level has two Torii gates reminiscent of Shinto shrines from Japan. This level is a sacred place. This level doesn't really exist anywhere in China or Japan, but this level has an Oriental atmosphere to it and this level can only be found in Course World, where anything is possible. 😉

The level is a combination of the most disliked challenges by a majority of players, based from what I've observed:
☑ Underwater (swimming levels, in general)
☑ Slow auto scroll (probably because they find it tough to speedrun these)
☑ Long levels (these are very tiring to play)
☑ No powerups (except for the star at the end....well....it's at the end)
Honorable mentions: Tight spaces (at least this isn't pixel perfect) and Koopaling RNG.

I combined all of those hideous challenges into one gargantuan evil level. But it's an evil level with a theme around it, and it has a story in it too. I was designing this level to be as difficult as possible but within my skill range. I playtested each obstacles very carefully. In fact, I even nerfed some of these obstacles otherwise the no-death run would become impossible for me.

It took me TWO WEEKS to finish designing this gigantic level. I spent A LOT of time playtesting each sections of this level. I lost track of how many hours I accumulated for all the time I spent for playtesting everything. And when I was attempting the upload, I failed miserably on the first day and I could do the no-death run. I finally conquered this with a no-death run on the second day of upload, so if I'm going to add the total time I spent (from 2 days) trying to win for the no-death run, I'd say the total time would be FOUR HOURS. Add an extra 1 hour for the remaining clear-check from both checkpoints and the complete upload time I spent for this level is FIVE HOURS!

I don't plan to make another BRUTAL level like this one for a loooooong long time. These levels are very stressful to upload and I don't want another session of pain & suffering. At least I succeeded to make a level like this, even just once. I created Dragon's Gate to be an absurdly difficult level mainly because I want to express my own ideas for my very own hardest level: A level that would be so stressful to play combining the things that players dislike from SMM2 levels. Besides, I also would like to make a level that would have a clear rate that's as low as possible. However, 3 of my friends have successfully conquered Dragon's Gate! These people are way more insane than me, and one of them cleared this level TWICE! 😅
