There are six unique ways of arranging a data set with three values. A factorial is an expression we can use to determine the total number of unique arrangements in a data set without having to count each individually. A factorial can often be expressed as the product of an integer and all the positive integers below it, but we obviously can’t use that colloquial definition for a set with zero values, since there are no positive integers below it.

But remember: a factorial expresses the amount of unique ways that the values in a set can be arranged. Therefore an empty set with nothing in it can only be arranged one way. Zero factorial equals one.
