Detective Pikachu is everything the Sonic movie is not: popular, cute, and coming to cinemas in the near future.

Okay, maybe that's a weird list of comparisons, but whatever.

Detective Pikachu wasn't the only Pokémon movie that The Pokémon Company considered making. At one point in time there was a different version of this film which wouldn't even have featured Pikachu as a main character, but would instead have focused on a version of Red from the original Pokémon Gameboy games.

This plan was shot down, which is probably for the best (because of reasons we get into in the video), but it's interesting to think of what might have been. In an alternate universe, the first live-action Pokémon movie might have featured Ash Ketchum as the star, rather than a talking Pikachu voiced by Ryan Reynolds.

(Some of us are still bitter that he's not voiced by Danny DeVito, but that's a discussion for another day.)
