Why Cuphead is in Smash (Masahiro Sakurai's Easiest Crossover Ever)
Cuphead’s in Smash! This is not a drill, people, it’s really happening!
Well, okay, Cuphead’s appearance is in Smash. When we made our video about Sans in Smash, a lot of you pointed out that he’s a Mii Gunner costume rather than a fully fledged character, and it’s the same case again. Either way, though, this is neat! A little indie title like Cuphead appearing in Super Smash Bros? Not to be sniffed at!
Jared Moldenhauer and the rest of Studio MDHR have been very clear that they wanted Cuphead and Mugman in Smash, with Jared going so far as to publicly give Nintendo permission to include the characters in the game. Developer willingness isn’t the only thing that matters though. So why did Cuphead get his invitation?
Well, it might have something to do with how much Masahiro Sakurai loves this game.
He’s raved about Cuphead in his weekly column in Famitsu magazine, praising it for its art style, but also for its difficulty.
Beyond this, while Cuphead is an Xbox property thanks to an exclusivity contract, Microsoft have been very eager to work with Nintendo in the past, both getting Cuphead onto the Switch, and letting Nintendo include Banjo Kazooie in Smash Bros Ultimate.
It turns out that when everyone wants to work together, these kinds of collaborations are really easy!
We also felt like this video was a great opportunity to point out just how lovely Maja Moldenhauer is. Not only is she a super cool artist, inking every single frame of animation for Cuphead single-handedly while pregnant and juggling kids, but she also took time out of her day to send us a message saying she enjoyed one of our videos.
We’ve heard from a few developers who’ve watched out videos over time, but having Maja Moldenhauer slide into our DMs was definitely one of the highlights of running this channel!
Anyway, hope you enjoyed this video. Apologies that it’s a bit short and rough around the edges; we wanted to get it out to you as soon as possible after Masahiro Sakurai’s Smash Bros direct. We’ll be back tomorrow with an explanation of why Byleth is in Smash.
It’s going to be a busy day!
