After the fight with Murphy Dalton, Lance brought a lot of heat on Jack, contesting him for leadership and scolding him for inactivity. Lance stood for democracy and maintaining the American way. His penultimate act was to ask Rebecca to draft The Mall Constitution. On the first day of September, when the first raid team, composed of Jim, Dex, Linda, and Liam went out for food but failed to reach it, Lance, having recovered from his patrol night, had to do something. He had to try again. The people were running out of food. So Lance, Linda, Liam, and a brave young man Jackson Walker, metalworker, went out as raid team 2, to try to bring some food from the market. The team agreed to let Lance take point, but in the field things don't always work out. People panic, people's nerves give out, people rush ahead, not seeing the danger in the Mist. Planning the route, Lance found two of his compatriots ahead of him, and two monsters, leaping at them from the ruins before Lance could warn them. He had to choose which teammate to try to rescue. He chose. Then he chose the other. Neither of the two monsters took significant enough damage. In the end, as Linda and Jackson were torn apart and bleeding from their injuries, the last thing Lance could do is give Liam a chance to get out. He drew the Spider Centraur onto himself and fell to the beast, axe in hand.

The blade of that axe had an etching on it, one word: "Democracy".

Only Liam Crawford survived that run.
