The Beginners Guide & Manufacturing Meaning
The Beginner's Guide by Davey Wreden is one of those games like Outer Wilds where it is of the utmost importance that you experience blindly. If your eyes drifted a bit while I talked during the intro to reading this, please do not finish the video without playing the game yourself, you are robbing yourself of an experience and your own interpretation.
It reminds me a bit of Noah Caldwell-Gervais' video essay on Kentucky Route Zero, where he talks about how anyone who says they've "solved" that game haven't really gotten it, and how I got much more out of that video having played the game and formed my own thoughts and opinions rather than seeing it through his eyes first.
PirateSoftware put out a short a month ago recommending this game to a developer that was struggling with motivation and the process of creating. I am not a game developer, but I would argue that this game will speak to anyone that's ever had to do a difficult thing, be it creative or not. Mustering the courage and motivation to go about doing things we find difficult is, well... difficult lol
If you made your way to this video and haven't checked out PSoft I would highly recommend his Youtube channel for both his short form and long form streaming content. He is a very knowledgeable and sweet individual that deserves all of the success he is finding lately.
And if you somehow played this game or didn't know what The Stanley Parable is... I mean what the fuck man?
Seriously, though, there's only so much time in the day and I understand having not watched or played a thing, but if you enjoy anything about this game, or this video, The Stanley Parable is an absurdist game that taps into some of the same things but in a way that will absolutely get at least one good chuckle out of you. All of this stuff will be linked below.
Also, let me know how I did if you happen to read this. I kinda had the thoughts forming for this video in the hour or two after I played the game and before I looked anything up for myself typed out a crazy manifesto about it and then threw it together. This is more or less a pseudo-video essay and I tried to do a bit more work on the audio/music side of things to set the tone. My delivery on my scripts and the writing of my scripts still needs some work though lol
