12Lunacid is an Indie, First Person, Action RPG Retro Dungeon Crawler in the vein of Ultima: Underworld, or King’s Field; oh ya!
You are banished into the earth, dropped into the dungeon with nothing, and you must survive!
Explore, battle, and adventure in the dark (it’s not that dark, but you can pump the gamma up if you want).
Retro Look, Retro Combat:
Think Old school King’s Field, complete with a PS1 / PSX retro look, which Lunacid absolutely nails.
You explore the retro, yet good looking caverns, fighting different kinds of monsters like Giant Snails, magic giant snails that will try to blast you, creepy bug things that can curse you and fire off a dark volley of magic, and more!
For example, the Giant Snails will hide in their shells; taking much less damage, then quickly (for a snail) spin around and try to take a bit out of you.
It matters where you hit the monsters here too; so aim for their weak point (hint, it’s usually the head)
I love the sound when you kill enemies and get their experience, and especially when you crit; it sounds so good; such a good Kingsfield reference!
There is no stamina limit to your attacking or blocking like in Skyrim or Dark Souls; just a bit of a charge up for your power attack, so stick and move here; Lunacid is a big fan of the real time square dance!
The RPG:
There are 9 classes available, right at the start, with different starting stats, lvls, and resistances; very nice.
Classes:
Knight: High Strength, lots of hp
Witch: more mana
Thief: Speed and Dex I think
Vampire: Replenished by shredding blood; weak to fire
Undead: Highly resistant; weak to fire
Cleric: Probably resistances
Royal: start well equipped
Shinobi: ninja assassin
Forsaken: lvl 1 challenge start
As an old-school RPG, character gain experience as they defeat monsters; which is always nice
In Lunacid, much like in Dark Souls you lvl up at specific points; here it’s not bonfires, but the glowing red crystals; they also heal you, let you warp between them, and save your game; so very handy!
Each lvl up, you get points to put in your attributes, increasing per point put in
Str: +5 hp, and 0.4% to attack
Def: +10hp, and how much you can guard before it is broken
Spd: Max running speed: about 0.3% per point
Dex: 0.1% to jump height, and damage with ranged weapons
Int: +8 mana; how fast spells charge
Res: approx .06% to resistance, and how long debuffs last
Controller Support is present and feels surprisingly good for a First Person Dungeon Crawler, and good old Mouse and Keyboard control is present as well.
Still, it is a first person Dungeon Crawler, and I find those always feel best with Mouse and Keyboard control, so that is mostly what I used in the above video.
