"Army of Thieves" (2021) directed by and starring Matthias Schweighöfer is an odd heist film taking place in a weird universe. I've seen worse, but I personally don't think this prequel should have existed in the first place.

This is a prequel to "Army of the Dead" (2021). We follow a master safe cracker named Sebastian (Schweighöfer). He is a timid fellow but is extremely skilled at opening locks nobody else can. He is recruited by a woman named Gwen (Nathalie Emmanuel) to join her team of thieves. Their objective is to steal large amounts of cash from three different banks and they can only do it using Sebastian's skills.

Army of Thieves is really weird because of the background zombie baggage from Army of the Dead. The zombie stuff isn't funny or interesting, it's just weird, out of place, and completely irrelevant. The tone of this film feels really off to me as well, choosing inappropriate songs for scenes and making the actors do peculiar things at the wrong times. One scene really illustrated to me the direction of the film, which was when that over the top abusive INTERPOL agent accidentally bumps into his partner and apologizes for impeding her . . . Maybe I'm just looking too much into it, but that scene illustrates to me the potential that they are one-taking most of the scenes and running with it regardless of any mistakes the actors make or if the delivery / execution of an idea comes off weird and jarring.

One good element to the film is the beautiful women, both
Nathalie Emmanuel & Ruby O. Fee are incredibly attractive and at least make the experience somewhat more worthwhile because I get the privilege of watching their stunning faces and listening to their lovely voices. More bad things though, the character motivations make little to no sense, Sebastian becoming a criminal bank robber in the first place is nonsensical and out of character for him, while Gwen's entire backstory makes her look bad and also doesn't make sense (She comes from a privileged rich family and ran away from home at 17 to pursue a life of crime just for the thrill of it, not necessity). The fact this is tied to Army of the Dead at all is a bad thing because it probably would have been way better without any of the stupid lore and circumstances from that bad film. The action was almost good in this, while I loathed and despised Brad Cage (Stuart Martin), he did provide some of the most thrilling scenes in the entire movie.

Army of Thieves is really weird and should not exist. The film was dead on arrival purely because of it's forced connection to an even worse film than this one.
