"In the industrial age people want progress. We give it to them... I even resurrected myself!"

Developed by the Scavenger team, Lemon, and released exclusively for the Sega Saturn console in 1997, AMOK is essentially a 3D shooter with quite simple gameplay mechanics based on a seek and destroy formula. As a mecenary on the planet AMOK, the player must take control of the "Slambird", a mechanised vehicle equipped with various weapons in a bid to reignite hostilities between once waring factions thus ensuring profitable sales of armaments for an underground organisation known simply as the Bureau.

The game comprises eight levels proper and each unfolds across various locations including desert, urban and underwater locales. Graphically, the game features nice explosion and light-source shading effects and everything runs very smoothly. The biggest niggle however is the limited draw distance and often dark backdrops. The game also seems to considerably ramp up the difficulty level in later stages which can prove frustrating.

Despite this I found myself really enjoying AMOK what with its responsive controls and great soundtrack as composed by Jesper Kyd. Whilst it may not be essential there's certainly enough about AMOK to warrant curiosity and perhaps the inclusion into the discerning Saturn collectors software library.
