Released way back in 1999 for the Sega Dreamcast, Power Stone is a near perfect conversion of the Sega Naomi-based coin-op game that was developed by Capcom. In what is essentially a beat-em-up, the game combined stunning visuals for its time along with enclosed 3D arenas where one or two players ran freely using every means possible to achieve victory over the opponent.

Whilst the basic moves for each character are quite by-the-numbers its the arenas themselves that offer up great interactivity for the player and make for some hugely enjoyable and memorable gameplay moments. For example, crates can be picked up and hurled and huge poles can be ripped from the ground and swung at an unwitting opponent. It all certainly makes for a frantic gameplay experience.

In addition to using objects in the arenas as projectiles, temporary weapons are also available to the player including flame throwers, rocket launchers and even a giant hammer!

Most critical to the combat however are the power stones. Collecting three of these gems will power up the player character for a short amount of time providing the ability to unleash devastating attacks.

Whilst the character roster may not be biggest they are all well designed, original and add real charm to the game. Along with a host of unlockables to uncover there is also decent longevity to the game too.

Power Stone was one of the first true 3D beat-em-ups for the Dreamcast and remains as one of the systems finer titles. Superb visuals, hugely addictive gameplay and decent music and sound effects make Capcom's Power Stone a Dreamcast essential.
