Fighting Vipers 2 - Sega Dreamcast 2001
Released in 2001 for the Dreamcast, Fighting Vipers 2 is the follow up to the arcade original and Sega Saturn port of Fighting Vipers which itself was a pretty decent and successful, if somewhat odd, 3D versus fighter. Whilst the core gameplay of the series seems to remain intact with the sequel and is enjoyable, the game comes up short when compared to other 3D versus fighters on the Dreamcast such as Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive 2 and Power Stone.
Most noticeable is the lack of 3D movement which is now taken for granted in 3D fighters nowadays. Fighting Vipers 2 also skimps on extra modes and gameplay options. Essentially the Arcade mode is really the only mode worth bothering with, with the Training mode in particular falling well short of expectations in that it lacks move lists with which to assist the player in learning each characters moves.
Character design itself will most likely be a "love it" or "loathe it" affair for most players while some of the backgrounds are a little bland compared to Fighting Vipers 2 more esteemed peers.
Overall the game appears to rely on the strength of its gameplay and it is as enjoyable as ever particularly when smashing opponents through the walls of the enclosed arenas. It's just a shame that AM2 didn't make more of an effort to push the series forward with this sequel which, as a result, has largely being left to languish in obscurity.
