Arcade Classics gameplay for the CD-i
12Arcade Classics is a compilation of three classic Namco properties: Galaxian, Ms. Pac-Man, and Galaga. Of the three games included, Galaxian is probably the best conversion (or I should say, the most faithful). Ms. Pac-Man, much like other console conversions, features remixed visuals and a scrolling screen. Galaga is the weakest link on the collection, as it features a fairly choppy framerate, a shrunken screen size, and enemies and bullets that move faster early in the game than they are supposed to. So, if you are a CD-i owner, is this a worthwhile pickup? Well, in my opinion, unless you are simply collecting, I'd recommend passing on this. Galaxian is best played on a system that offers more responsive controls, and Ms. Pac-Man can be had elsewhere in a similar remixed form on platforms like the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Galaga is pretty much a non-game, and if you want to play that, grab any other Namco compilation from the PS1 era and up, which is common, cheap, and most importantly, faithful to the original. The saddest part is that this came out in 1996, around the same time the Namco Museum compilations became available on the PS1. And did I mention that Galaga on the NES is a much more faithful (and playable) version? Kind of sad, unfortunately, but that's how it typically goes with CD-i software.
