232024 BMW i5 M60 First Drive Review: The Electric 5 Goes M\n\nWith the all-new, all-electric 2024 BMW i5, the legendary Bavarian brand brings its core values of driving dynamism and premium luxury to the pivotal EV age. We recently got behind the wheel of the spicy i5 M60 performance variant to see if BMW has succeeded.\n\nBeauty Is Electrified\nTake one glance at the i5 and you know BMW's design DNA courses through its sculptural sheetmetal. The classic BMW proportions are there, the long hood, the wide rear haunches, the sleek greenhouse - it's all quintessentially 5 Series even if the twin kidney grilles are sealed shut. BMW's designers have managed to lend the i5 a true Bimmer face despite the lack of an internal combustion engine up front.\n\nInside, the i5 pushes BMW's modern luxury ethos to new heights. High-quality leather, real wood and metal trim, and an expanse of curved glass across the dash create an atmosphere of richness. The curved display housing the digital instrument cluster and iDrive 8.5 infotainment system looks superb, but we lament the lack of physical climate controls.\n\nProperly M-fied\nUnder the skin, the i5 M60 packs a potent dual-motor electric powertrain pumping out 593 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. That allows a 0-60 mph sprint of just 3.7 seconds, making this the quickest 5 Series yet. The handling is predictably brilliant thanks to an adaptive air suspension and rear-axle steering, with direct, communicative steering and minimal body roll.\n\nHowever, all that M-tuned performance comes at the expense of range. The i5 M60's 81.2 kWh battery pack is EPA-rated for just 256 miles between charges in this configuration. That number falls well short of key rivals like the Porsche Taycan and upcoming electric E-Class from Mercedes. At least DC fast charging up to 205 kW is supported.\n\nVerdict: An Excellent Electric Evolution\nStarting at $84,100, the 2024 BMW i5 M60 moves the Bavarian brand's electric strategy in the right direction with a compelling blend of traditional BMW traits and forward-looking EV technology. It looks great, drives even better, and has the premium vibe BMW buyers expect.
