All NEW BMW Z4 M40i 2024 - Visual OVERVIEW, exterior & interior
11BMW gave its Z4 roadster a light refresh for 2024, but the changes are more than skin deep in the range-topping M40i version we recently tested. The inline-six model gets some visual tweaks to the grille and bumpers, but it's the revised suspension tuning that makes the biggest impact.\n\nUnder the hood is the same turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six producing a stout 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The engine is an absolute gem, delivering robust acceleration from virtually any rpm while making a pleasant burble from the dual exhaust. The sprint to 60 mph happens in just 4.5 seconds.\n\nWhere the 2024 Z4 M40i sees improvement is in its ride quality. The electronically-controlled dampers are now standard across the range, and BMW seems to have re-calibrated them for a more compliant ride, especially in the Comfort setting. The pre-facelift Z4 rode a bit too stiffly, even on smooth roads, but this update allows the suspension to soak up imperfections better while still remaining composed over undulating surfaces.\n\nThe steering hasn't been left untouched, either. It feels a tad lighter at low speeds, making the Z4 feel a bit more maneuverable around town. Unfortunately, BMW still leans toward the numb side when it comes to steering feel and feedback. Selectingthe Sport mode adds some heft but doesn't translate much more road feel to the driver's hands.\n\nCuriously, BMW didn't update the Z4's interior or infotainment system as part of this refresh. The cabin continues to have a premium look and feel with solid material quality, but the design is starting to look a bit dated compared to some of BMW's newer offerings. Ergonomics are still sound, however, with very good ingress/egress for a low-slung roadster.\n\nWith a starting price of $56,475, the 2024 Z4 M40i remains a bit of an oddball in the roadster realm. It doesn't have the precision or poise of the Porsche Boxster, nor the purity and driving engagement of the lighter Mazda MX-5 Miata. Instead, the BMW splits the difference, offering brawny performance and a surprising level of grand touring comfort.
