11The Volkswagen Touareg has always tried to blend luxury amenities with a more affordable price tag compared to premium rivals like the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE. For 2024, VW has updated its flagship SUV with more tech features and powertrain options to make it an even more compelling luxury SUV value proposition. But does the sensible German still make sense against newer, more opulent competition?\n\nA Tech-Forward, Premium Cabin\nStep inside the Touareg's spacious cabin and you're greeted by VW's new Innovision Cockpit featuring a massive 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster. The glossy displays look modern and offer plenty of customization, while the large menu icons make inputs easy when driving. VW's multimedia systems can still be buggy at times, but the Touareg responds quickly to inputs for the most part.\n\nCabin materials impress with a premium, well-assembled feel using leather, wood, and metal trims. However, the Touareg's interior still can't quite match rivals like the Audi Q7 and BMW X5 when it comes to outright luxury ambiance and design wow factor. At least the spacious Volkswagen provides excellent front and rear passenger space for up to five occupants. Just don't expect a third row – the Touareg is strictly a two-row affair.\n\nPunchy Yet Efficient Powertrain Choices\n\nUnder the hood, the Touareg serves up a range of potent yet relatively efficient six-cylinder engine choices. The base turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel V6 makes 228 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, while a more powerful 282-hp version is available. Both provide robust thrust off the line and can tow up to 7,700 lbs when properly equipped.\n\nFor those seeking gasoline power, a 335-hp 3.0-liter turbo V6 is smooth and swift, able to hit 60 mph in just over 6 seconds.
