Part 1: Historical Perspective
_ 1.0: The Long Count
Regardless of what you may think of the Mayan culture, among other things we owe them the credit for the numerical value of zero; the importance of which can not be understated. The Mayans were using the numerical value of zero in their computations 1,100 years before contact with European explores in the 19th century.
They had also modified, through selective breeding, maize, from a type of grass, around 8,000BC
Their culture had multiple calendars, based upon the movement of multiple astrological bodies outside the solar one we commonly use today; one of which is Venus, another the Moon. The one we are interested in is the Long Count, which tells the tale of the Great Year.
This calendaring system was commonly used in that region among the Aztecs, Olomecs, Toltecs, etc.
BCE year 2012; specifically 21 Dec, the calendar ended, to be restarted as the beginning of the New Great Year, the 26,000 year cycle. This is the total time it takes our galaxy to rotate around a central sun.
The Platonic Great Year is 25,920 yrs.
_ 1.1: Failed Claim.
Let's look at the claim of the doomsday prophecy which failed.
I believe this is not a small element to this discussion, as it encapsulates a number of problems. The first of which may be the idea of the "Ending of the world."
For perhaps 10 years leading up to 2012, I was told that the this marked the ending of the world. I heard it, but I knew the planet was not going to physically disappear. I simple said at the time, "this is the year we'll look at and say that everything changed."
Certainly, the amount of people, and businesses (including myself) I helped move between 2009 to 2016, was more than I'd helped the entire remainder of my life. That 7 yr. period beat-out the rest of my 54 yrs. Amazing to look back at.
It was presumed that the "ending of the world" would mean the physical end to the planet Herself. From whence does this notion come?
Look at the calander itself; from where do we get the idea that 21 Dec. 2012 marked the ending of the PLANET, rather than simply the world that you know?
Who translated the calendar to equate to end of the planet, and not the World-as-you-know-it?
There's two terms that should be introduced: The phenomenological World; and the Sensible World. One is the World at large, around you, that's beyond your control, which you may, or may not understand; likely you/we don't. The Sensible world is the one I perceive through my senses.
We might see this as the objective vs. the subjective experience of living here.
It can be a difficult, if not philosophical, maybe a metaphysical concept to wrap one's head around: that the phenomenological world may not necessarily be ending, but your subjective view will be radically changing.
When you point your finger at the moon, do not confuse your finger with the moon.
Yet, I can also see the planet Herself getting ready to go through an actually physical transition.
So, in the interests of exploring the long count calendar, let's look at some of the character who were involved at the beginning.
