150 Graves Abandoned In The Woods By The State At The Fix Gerber Bitting Cemetery In Reading, PA

In 1963 Pennsylvania decided to build highway 422 running through the city of Reading. The only problem? The Fix Gerber Bitting Cemetery established in the early 1800’s was in the way. So what to do? Build around the cemetery? Plan a different route for the highway? Nope! The state decided that the dead have no rights and began construction as planned. 150 graves were exhumed with the headstones simply tossed into a ditch next to highway, leaving many locals to question if all, or if any of the graves were actually removed before asphalt was laid. Today only about 50 graves with headstones still remain intact in what is possibly Reading’s oldest cemetery. This however was only the most recent troubles the cemetery faced over the decades, as both the canal & railroad all took their share of land in the late 1800’s, and even a dynamite shed was built on the property in 1878. What little remains of this historical cemetery needs to be saved, and hopefully the headstones the state so easily desecrated can be moved and preserved. Unfortunately this is a sad and clear reminder that when it comes to “progress” and money, the deceased do not matter to officials. It’s a shame to see how Pennsylvania has treated their citizens of the past.
