Saddam's control of the city was over and many people took this opportunity to attack and then loot symbols of his regime...this included Ba'ath Party headquarters but also universities and libraries.

As so often happens the crushing order of the tyranny gave way to the chaos of liberty.

But the British were not immediately ready for policing the city and instead focused on disarming the Iraqi military units, defending key points and restoring vital services. They also began searching for Ba'ath Party officials, Fedayeen Saddam members and any evidence regarding those Weapons of Mass Destruction that had been used to justify the invasion
