Remember when Hyundai Ioniq just meant a little electrified hatchback? Those days are over—now, Ioniq might be just about the most important term in Hyundai's lexicon. It's a badge applied to Hyundai electric vehicles, of which there will be many in the years to come.

So far, Hyundai has created only a few new Ioniq vehicles: the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6. But there's an Ioniq 7 on the way, too. Just a single digit sets them apart, but the vehicles don't share much aside from their all-electric fundamentals. Keep reading to get familiar with the Hyundai Ioniq models on sale now, and what's on the way.

Ioniq 5 vs. Ioniq 6 vs. Ioniq 7: Segment

If you parked the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Ioniq 7 next to each other, their different form factors would be immediately clear. The Ioniq 5 is best described as a midsize crossover, while the Ioniq 6 is a sedan.

What is the Ioniq 7? That's a bit harder to say—it doesn't exist yet. So far Hyundai has only shown the SEVEN concept, which is larger than the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6. We think the SEVEN concept previews an upcoming Ioniq 7, which will likely be a three-row SUV that arrives for model year 2024 or 2025.

Ioniq 5 vs. Ioniq 6 vs. Ioniq 7: Seating Capacity

Both the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 have two rows of seats, providing space for five occupants inside. Considering it's expected to be a three-row SUV, the Ioniq 7 could have seats for six, seven, or eight, depending on what configurations become available.

Ioniq 5 vs. Ioniq 6 vs. Ioniq 7: Batteries
Hyundai's Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) provides a basis for every Ioniq model in production today. Designed to be adapted and scaled for specific applications, E-GMP can accommodate different battery capacities.

The Ioniq 5 is available with two batteries: a 58-kWh unit in the SE Standard Range trim, and a 77.4-kWh pack in all others. Every Ioniq 6 model is equipped with that larger 77.4-kWh battery.

What batteries will the Ioniq 7 offer? Hints come from the Kia EV9, the new three-row SUV built by Hyundai's corporate cousin. Given the similarities between the Kia EV6 crossover and the Hyundai Ioniq 5, it wouldn't be surprising if the EV9 provides a preview for the Ioniq 7. The EV9 is also based on E-GMP, and can be equipped with either a battery containing 76.1 kWh or 99.8 kWh of capacity. These batteries will likely be available in the Ioniq 7.

Ioniq 5 vs. Ioniq 6 vs. Ioniq 7: Charging
A key feature of E-GMP is its 800-volt electrical architecture, which allows for an impressively high charging capacity and, accordingly, shorter recharging times.

Both the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 can recharge at up to 239 kW, going from 10 to 80 percent battery capacity in a claimed 18 minutes under ideal conditions. We've observed our Ioniq 5 long-term review vehicle recharge from 4 to 90 percent in 28 minutes on a 350-kW Level 3 charger, taking its range from 16 miles up to 222 miles.

It's possible that the Ioniq 7 will recharge slightly slower than the other Ioniq models. Specifications for the Kia EV9 state a max charge rate of 230 kW—still fast, just not quite as fast.

Ioniq 5 vs. Ioniq 6 vs. Ioniq 7: Range
The longest-range Hyundai Ioniq model is the 6 in SE RWD trim, which uses a single rear motor and aerodynamic wheels to earn a range of 361 miles—impressive. The Ioniq 6 SE AWD has two motors, one on each axle, but still gets 316 miles of range. The Ioniq 6 SEL and Limited trims have different wheels and get 305 miles with RWD, or 270 miles with AWD.

Compared to the Ioniq 6, the Ioniq 5 is taller and more boxy, factors that limit its range. In the Ioniq 5 lineup, the SE, SEL, and Limited trims with RWD get 303 miles on a charge. Choosing AWD on any of those trims lowers the range to 266 miles. The entry-level Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range model is good for 220 miles.

How far the Ioniq 7 will be able to drive remains to be determined, but it could have different batteries than either of its smaller counterparts. Based on stats for the EV9, estimate range for the Ioniq 7 to measure about 260 miles on the low end, and 300 miles at the high end.
