Elissa managed to survive the Joining, a "ritual" that involves drinking the blood of the darkspawn to master their taint to detect the spawn and slay the Archdemon.. If you survive, you become a Grey Warden. If not? Welp, sorry about that but you die. The king and Duncan requested that Alistair and Elissa light the beacon at the Tower of Ishal to signal for Loghain's troops to enter the fray. But... darkspawn! They've taken over the Tower already, and so the two battled through on their way to the top. They managed to light the beacon, but...

Loghain retreated.
Both Duncan and the King are dead.
Annnnnd Elissa became a pin-cushion, courtesy of some genlock archers.
