When the ticket office was closed and there was no ordinary ticket machine available, one could purchase a "Permit to Travel." With this permit, one was allowed to board the train for just 5p. The idea was to pay for the remainder of your fare via the guard. Now, these machines have been largely phased out as most stations now have quite the sophisticated ticket machines.
