5This series features me booting up in 2023. I love roguelikes, old-school RPGs, and permadeath games. This game was gifted to my by a friend on my birthday as I love DCSS, Qud, Dungeonmans, ToME, roguelikes and RPGs and I've always wanted to get better at this game, so I'm starting a new character to get more ADOM experience!
ADOM (or Ancient Domains of Mystery) is a seminal classic roguelike. ADOM is a ton of fun but can be daunting at first, as the game is difficult. As most roguelikes are-especially the older ones--death is a regular occurrence, it is permanent, and there are many choices to be made in the game, even early on with character building. In this complete beginners guide to ADOM, I will explain to you the basics from the ground up by starting a brand new run so you can watch and even play along. I will explain the controls, the UI, the mechanics, how to make a new character, adventure, fight, manage your inventory and resources, and survive. I detail my thought process, sharing tips and tricks along the way but I spoil nothing about the game or the story. I don't force a particular path or tell you to min/max, but rather help by providing the fundamentals so you can enjoy ADOM at your own pace. I play in this guide as a Dwarven Fighter of the Candle to give us a nice hearty character. If you are thinking of buying the game and want to see early gameplay, or have purchased it but would like some pointers on the basics, this is the guide for you!
