Antoine-Frédéric Gresnick
(Liège, 2 March 1755 - Paris, 16 October 1799)

French-Belgian composer. After studies at the Conservatorio di Sant’Onofrio a Porta Capuana in Naples, he returned to France, becoming director of the opera in Lyons in 1780. In 1786 he accompanied Gertrude Mara to London but by 1794 had settled in Paris. In 1799 his opera Le rêve stirred considerable controversy, and rumors that his death was caused by intrigues related to this opera cannot be discounted. His music reflects the style of François-Joseph Gossec, being simple and homophonic. This includes 19 operas, two concertos, a symphony, several large hymns, and a number of smaller vocal works.
