Art Preservation Hidden in Plain Sight (at @metmuseum)
When the Crown of the Andes -- consisting of 5 POUNDS of gold and 400+ emeralds -- arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, its delicate gold arches were sagging, threatening to collapse on itself. In order to be handled and displayed safely, the priceless artifact needed a permanent but reversible mounting system that would provide support while remaining visually discrete. Luckily, conservation preparator Matthew Cumbie was up for the task, and explains to Adam Savage just how he tackled the challenge. (No pressure!)
