The Battle of Antietam, also known as the Sharpsburg battle, happened on September 17, 1862, during the Civil War between General Lee's Confederate Army and General McClellan's Union Army in Maryland. It was part of the Maryland Campaign and marked the first big clash in the East on Union territory. The bloodiest battle was the assaults on the Sunken Road, also known as the Bloody Lane, which was a series of intense engagements during this battle. It was the deadliest day in U.S. history with 22,727 casualties on both sides.
