More than 2,500 books were banned in 2022, a nearly 35 percent increase in the number of banned titles from a year earlier.

Among those banned in 2021 was author Ashley Pérez's novel 'Out of Darkness' about love and racism in 1930s Texas.

Pérez joined DBL to discuss her writing, the "incredibly personal and painful' reaction to her title being banned in 50 school districts and the impact the lack of representation has on young people.
