Like the original Battletoads, the game is a side-scrolling beat 'em up. Up to three players can play cooperatively as Battletoads: Rash, Pimple and Zitz, each with a different play style. The game's graphic style is hand-drawn and has more of a cartoon esthetic than previous games in the series.
The game features an obstacle course reminiscent of the original game's notoriously difficult turbo tunnel, but instead of the original's side view, the camera in Reboot is behind the bikes. The nostalgic difficulty level has been retained, and the game-over screen offers encouraging messages to the player, but there are also a number of selectable difficulty levels
