Beating All NA N64 Games - Ogre Battle 64: Person Of Lordly Caliber (67 of 296) [Chapter 4]
RANKING: A+
This is the 3rd game in the main series; the 1st one was on SNES and the 2nd one on PS1. This is a strategy RPG. One of the few RPGs on N64, and thus very sought after; glad I got mine CIB just before the Virus & stimulus checks went out, because the price on it ha skyrocketed.
Story is you are Magnus Gallant how is a noble in the kingdoms army, after watching the kingdom oppress the lower class, Magnus leads a rebellion against the Empire.
To beat the game, you have to go through 4 Chapters, up to 43 battles, though some are not necessary to do.
The game play is you start a the main map, and you pick which battle you want to do, as you beat them more battle levels open up. On the main map you have the option to form your units for battle. Up to 5 people to a unit. In the battle map you lead the unit to do the objective. Which is usually just capture the enemy HQ. You lead your unit there, enemy units will meet you, then you battle them.
In a unit battle, your characters have a pre-set amount of time they can attack, up to 4, but usually 2 or 3 (this depends on your characters class and where in formation they are). Once all the turns are up, if the enemy is still alive, it say who won or lost that battle. Who ever loses gets pushed back in the battle map screen.
The formation is a 3 by 3 square. Place of certain characters are import, some are better in the front, some better in the back, like mages who are weak and need someone in front to take hits for them. This applies to the enemies too. Mostly you want to attack their leader, once he dies the enemy unit doesn't move, unless you chase them, then they run away. So if the leader is behind some one else he is protected from physical attacks until the guy(s) in front are dead. but you can get over them with magic and arrows though.
Unlike, other RPGs where you can directly select which enemy to attack, you can't. All you can do is give general orders: "Attack Leader" "Weakest" "Strongest" "Auto". Formation is a factor, say the you want to kill the leader who is in the front-right, and one of your guys in the front-left. He can't attack him until all the enemies in the left and center are dead. That's why it's best to have the middle slots taken up by your guys so they can attack any enemy from any spot, without going through other enemies 1st.
I highly recommend it, it's one of the few RPGs on the system, and it's a really good one, with a good story. The battle system takes some getting use to to learn, but once you do it's really fun. It's about a just under 40 hour game.
